Grow in Faith by Being Faithful

by Jon Walker

“Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.” John 16:22 (NIV)

Do you find that some days you’re staring at your circumstances and making faithless judgments about the things you see? I know I struggle with believing the biblical truth that God is present in all circumstances, particularly when it is a no-good-dirty-rotten day.

Jesus, on the other hand, was certain about the reality of God and certain about God’s presence in his life.

Think about this: Heading into a crisis that would cost him his life, Jesus was so certain of God’s presence that, during the Last Supper, not one of his disciples discerned the gravity of the circumstances! Jesus was confident that God was not only present, but also working through the circumstances.
And, yes, later that evening Jesus began sweating blood from the strain of it all, but he still remained confident that the Father was there and aware. He trusted God was working things out.

We, too, can be certain that God is working in our lives. We develop this radical faith when we learn to trust in God’s  character, when we decide, in faith, that God is who he says he is and that he will do what he says he will do.

We come to know that God is faithful when we do the things he tells us to do and then see that he did come through on his promises. In other words, we grow in faith by being faithful. We trust Jesus and see that he is real, and that makes us trust him even more.

RESPONSIBILITY OF YOUR RIGHTS

RESPONSIBILITY OF YOUR RIGHTS

Eph 4:1+2

Intro: Spoke of 1) the importance of knowing our rights 2) our rights 3) Having open hearts and listening ears.

Know who we are in Christ.

In Ephesians Paul drills into us our responsibility to protect the reputation of Jesus Christ in our walk with Him.

Paul had a passion for developing and maturing believers. Preparing us to represent Jesus Christ in the earth.

To enjoy our rights of salvation, we must realize, appreciate and respect the responsibilities associated with those rights.

Our actions, lifestyle, and the manner in which we relate to people are very important as citizens of the kingdom.

Eph 4:1 …walk worthy of the calling with which you were called….

i.e. we should live our lives in such a way that the Lord would not regret having saved us.

1) Have been made alive Col 2:13

  • Saved by grace and prepared for good works as a result (Eph 2:1-10)
  • Already have the life of God 1 John 5:12

2) Forgiven Col 2:13+14

  • Completely, totally 2 Cor 5:17-21

3) Delivered from:

  • Sin Rom 6:14 …for sin shall not have dominion over you…
  • Sickness 1 Pet 2:24
  • The power of the devil (bondage) Col 1:13+14 Eph 1:7
  • The curse (of poverty) Gal 3:13+14
  • Fear of death 2 Tim 1:7 …not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind…

Heb 2:14+15 …that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, (v15) and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage…

4) Must walk in this truth.

  • We must be willing to accept responsibility for our actions.
  • We must be committed to protecting the reputation of God.
  • We must walk with the Lord. No longer stumbling through this life.

Walk with Christ is a power walk!!!

Not walking in our own strength or wisdom, but in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Holy Spirit speaks only of Jesus, revealing His goodness, His justice and His grace.

Ø  We must walk with integrity to represent Him well.

We have been saved by God to fulfil His purpose and plan for our lives.

Old things passed away the day we were convicted, convinced and converted.

Now we are to walk in dignity (Eph 4:1) strength and love.

Empowered by His spirit.

Moved and motivated by His love.

Guided by His wisdom.

Eph 4:2

Lowliness

Acts 20:9 (Humility, humble-mindedness, modesty, a sense of moral insignificance, and a humble attitude of unselfish concern for the welfare of others. Total absence of arrogance, conceit and haughtiness.

Gentleness

1 Tim 6:11 Even-tempered, tranquil, balanced in spirit, unpretentious, and that has the passions under control. I.e. Meekness – not as an indication of weakness, but of power and strength under control. The person who possesses this quality pardons injuries, corrects faults, and rules his own spirit well.

Longsuffering – patience – long temper.

Word denotes lenience, forbearance, patient endurance. The ability to endure persecution and ill treatment. It describes a person who has power to exercise revenge but instead exercises restraint.

Bearing – endure.

The word carries the idea of persevering, tolerating, bearing with, putting up with, standing firm, and not losing courage under pressure.

HAVE AN OPEN HEART

HAVE AN OPEN HEART

AIM:  We’ll see the importance of always having an open heart and a listening ear, to receive wisdom and knowledge, insight and common sense from the Lord.

Prov 12:1 (LB) to learn, you must want to be taught. To refuse reproof (correction) is stupid.

Rev 2:7,11,17,29 …let him who has a listening ear hear what the spirit says…

“Listening ear” – Hear + Obey.

Beautiful attribute to any person is that he “listens” when someone talks – expecting to learn from him no matter who his is.

Peter – 2 Pet 3 – Learns from Paul…

Prov 12:1 (NKJ) …whoever loves instruction loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid.

CORRECTION IS NOT REJECTION.

Prov 13:18 … poverty and shame will come to him who ignores correction, but he who regards a rebuke (correction) will be honoured.

Prov 15:5 … but he who receives (keeps) correction is prudent. Showing carefulness and foresight).

Prov15: 10 …He who hates correction will die…

Prov 15:32 … he who disdains (ignores) instruction despises (hates) his own soul.

Job 5:17 …blessed is the man whom God corrects…

1 Cor 1:27

Examples:

CAIN:

Gen 4:2-8. Did not have an open heart, refused correction – did not repent he only thought of revenge – Critical unyielding hardened, unteachable spirit lead to murder.

HAM:

Gen 9:22. Critical spirit led to his descendants being slaves.

JOSEPH’S BROTHERS

Gen 37. Critical spirit, jealous envious almost killed Joseph.

KORAH

Num 16. Critical and envious not satisfied with what the Lord gave them. Grumbling complained, led to rebellion and death.

James 3:16…for where there is envy and strife, there ALL evil abounds.

Jesus’ brothers – those who knew Him – carpenters son. Matt 13:57 …so they were offended at Him. But Jesus said to them “A prophet is not without honour except in his own country and in his own house.”

Pharasees crucified Jesus!!

Balaam – God used a donkey! Num 22
