Past. Melody van der Merwe

13 May 2012 (am)

John 13:34-35

Intro: Proof of new birth – is walking in love (God’s love) People tend to belittle love, but God is Love. Love should be number one on our spiritual priority list.

1 Cor 12:13 – 13:3 (AMP)

31 But earnestly desire and zealously cultivate the greatest and best gifts and graces (the higher gifts and the choicest graces). And yet I will show you a still more excellent way [one that is better by far and the highest of them all—love]. If I [can] speak in the tongues of men and [even] of angels, but have not love (that reasoning, intentional, spiritual devotion such as is inspired by God’s love for and in us), I am only a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers (the gift of interpreting the divine will and purpose), and understand all the secret truths and mysteries and possess all knowledge, and if I have [sufficient] faith so that I can remove mountains, but have not love (God’s love in me) I am nothing (a useless nobody). Even if I dole out all that I have [to the poor in providing] food, and if I surrender my body to be burned or ]in order that I may glory, but have not love (God’s love in me), I gain nothing.

Life Point (p 1870 Joyce Meyer AMP)

1 Cor 13:1-3 begins a discourse on love. It tells us clearly that no matter how many gifts of the Spirit we may operate in, if we are not operating in love, all other gifts are useless. If we speak in tongues, but do not love, we just make a big noise. If we have prophetic power, and power to understand and interpret secrets and mysteries, if we have all knowledge and so much faith we can move mountains, but have not love, according to the apostle Paul, we are useless nobodies. Even if we give away all that we have to feed the poor and surrender our very lives, but do it with wrong motives and not out of love, we gain nothing.

Love above all (p1869 Joyce Meyer AMP)

Love is the greatest thing in the world. 1 Cor 12:31 teaches us that love should be number one on our spiritual priority list. We should study love, pray about love, and develop the fruit of love by practicing loving others. We learn in Gal 5:22,23 that love is one of the nine fruits of the Spirit available to those in whom God’s Holy Spirit lives.

God is love, so when we walk in His love we abide in Him. Because we walk in God’s love by receiving and expressing it, we should not deceive ourselves into thinking we can love God while we hate other people (see 1 John 4:20).

We seek many things during our lifetimes, hoping to find fulfilment in them. But without love, these things fall short of the desired goal. When we put our time and energy into things that do not fulfil us, we feel frustrated.

Love is the best thing we can commit our life to. …. The commitment to learn how to walk in love has been the single best decision I have ever made as a Christian.

Love not only blesses others; it also blesses the one doing the loving. Concentrating on being a blessing to others has brought me joy. I find it exciting.

All of us need to become students of love, excelling in the most important quality of all – love.

Love is the greatest thing in life and walking in love should be our main focus… 1 Cor 13:13 (AMP)

The most important thing (p1872 Joyce Meyer AMP)

1 Cor 13:13 says that love is the greatest thing. Faith and hope are vitally necessary, but as important as they are, they are not more important than love. Jesus gave us one new commandment which is to love one another as He loved us. He said that this would be the way the world knows we are His disciples (see John 13:34).

Love is not theory or talk, but action. It is revealed in the way we talk to people, how we treat them, and what we do or don’t do for them. Love has many very practical facets and can be seen in a variety of ways. For example, love is patient. When people are walking in love, they are longsuffering with the weaknesses and faults of others. Instead of believing the worst, love always believes the best of every person.

Love is not rude. It actually strives to have good manners and that is something we desperately need in society today. Love takes time to say “please” and “thank you.” Love takes time to really listen when others are talking. It is genuinely interested in others. Love builds people up; it edifies. Love does not find fault and criticize.

One of the facets of love that I enjoy thinking about is that love covers a multitude of sins. Love does not expose people’s faults. Instead it actually covers them unless, of course, something really needs to be exposed and then love handles the situation appropriately and with wisdom. So often we rush to tell every negative thing we hear or know about anybody, but real love does not behave that way. Love treats other people the way it wants to be treated. Ask yourself, “would I want someone to spread rumours about me and be a tale-bearer, or would I want them to cover my faults and pray for me?” of course, we know the answer, but still we often follow the flesh and do what we know we should not do.

Be hopeful at all times and walk in faith, but above all seek love and walk in it. God is love, and when we walk in love we show Him to those we come in contact with.

Matt 7:12 …whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the law and the prophets…

Love those who finish last, those who are ugly, those who are poor, and those who are powerless to help us.

Love does not snarl, attack or retaliate. Expects no earthly reward for service or kindness.

Stephen – loved those who stoned him … Acts 7:59+60

Jesus loved those who crucified him… “forgive them they know not what they do…”

Jesus’ love for us nailed Him to the cross… “I lay down my life…”

NOT – Schisms, disputes, unkind criticisms, defamation of character…

Love sacrificial, unconditional – constant and self-sustaining!

John 15:12+13+17 … gave up comforts, joys, took pain – beatings, nails in His hands, spear in His side, thorns on His head. We are called to bear with others’ sins, with inflicted pain, with stabbing, cruel remarks and treatment.

2 Pet 1:7+8

GODLINESS - LOVE (to love God) – OBEDIENCE (obey His word) and UNITY (walk in unity)

We are partakers in God’s divine nature 2 Pet 1:3+4

Brotherly kindness dissolves personal infighting and ungracious ignoring of one another. It allows refocusing on our real enemy. His divine power has give to us ALL things that pertain to life and godliness… HAVE BEEN GIVEN to us… partakers of the divine nature.

2 Pet 1:3+4

Heb 12:2-4 Jesus, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross…

LOVE SELFISHNESS

Greatest Commandment.

2 Cor 5:14-21 – Live for God

Love your enemies.

Bless them that curse you.

Do good to those that hate you.

Pray for your persecutors.

Golden Rule: Luke 6:30+31, Matt 5:51

Matt 5:48 KJV… be ye therefore perfect, (mature) even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect…

Notes (Spirit Filled Life Bible)

The emphasis in the command to be perfect is not on a flawless moral nature, but on an all-inclusive love that seeks the good of all. Instead of following the example of sinners who love only those who love them, we are to be like the Father in also loving those who do not love us.

Matt 5:3-12…. MUST BE – meek (strength under control), burdened for others (compassionate), humble, hungry for righteousness, Merciful (WW Rom 9:15), Pure in heart, wise, patient, loving, joyful, and gracious. (Matt 5:3-12)

SALT & LIGHT (v13-16)

Free from hypocrisy, selfishness and grudges (v20-24)

A peace-maker (v9+25-26)

Free from lusts (v27-30)

Truthful (v37)

Charitable, neighbourly and God-like

Ø ONLY POSSIBLE BY NEW BIRTH 2 Cor 5:17+22

Luke 6:36 … be merciful just as your Father is merciful (perfect) – compassionate. Such a man easily forgets injuries; forgives without being asked; and continues good, in spite of ingratitude (oiktirmon)

(v37+38)

Our personal interaction with God should produce within us the qualities of character that build and sustain all our relationships.

1 John 4:20+21

Thanksgiving, todah (toh-dah); Strong’s #8426: Thanks, thanksgiving, adoration, praise. This word is derived from the verb yadah, “to give thanks, to praise.” The root of yaday is yad, “hand.” Thus, to thank or praise God is “to lift or extend one’s hands” in thanks to Him. Todah appears more than 30 times in the OT, a dozen of these in the Psalms (50:23, 100:4) Todah is translated “sacrifice of praise” in Jer.33:11

Praise, tehillah (te-hil-lah, or in the plural, te-hil-lim); Strong’s #8416: a Celebration, a lauding of someone praise worthy; the praise or exaltation of God; praises, songs of admiration. The noun tehillah comes from the verb halal, which means “to praise, celebrate, and laud.” The Hebrew title of the Book of Psalms is Tehillim, literally the Book of Praises…

“LOVE” 1 John 4:8… God is love. (Rom 5:5)

If we have God on the inside of us, we have love on the inside of us (Rom 5:5… the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given us.)

Evidence of God in our lives = LOVE

Evidence of Baptism in the Holy Spirit = LOVE

Evidence of knowing Him 1 John 2:3-6

Keep His commandments Matt 22:36-40

How to love? John 13:34-35, John 15:12…love one another as I have loved you…

1. Fervently (earnestly, heartfelt) 1 Pet 1:22+23

2. With a pure heart – without hypocrisy – not personal gain – if you do good – fine – if not, you’re on your own. 1 Pet 1:22

3. As brothers. 1 Pet 3:8

Who to love?

1. Enemies.

Matt5:44…love your enemies.

Luke 6:27+35

2. Fellow Christians.

3. The Brotherhood

1 Pet 2:17 – all true Christians in the one family of God

4. Your Brother

1 John 4:21… and this commandment we have from Him; that he who loves God must love his brother also…

5. One Another

14. We dwell in God (1 John 4:16) (seated with Christ)

15. We are like him (1 John 4:17)… as He is, so are we in this world…

16. It proves we love God (1 John 4:20)

17. It is a command (1 John 4:21 + 5:2)

18. It is natural as sons of God (1 John 5:1+2)

“This means tremendous joy to you, I know, even though you are temporarily harassed by all kinds of trials and temptations. This is no accident — it happens to prove your faith, which is infinitely more valuable than gold …” (1 Peter 1:6-7 PH)In order to build your faith, God will give you a dream. Then, he’ll urge you to make a decision. But then he’ll allow a delay, because in the delay he matures you and prepares you for what is to come.

The truth is, you’ll have difficulties while God delays. This isn’t because he doesn’t care about you or that he’s forgotten your circumstances; rather, it’s one of the ways he pushes you toward the deep end of faith.

As God delays, you’ll face two types of difficulties: circumstances and critics. This is a natural part of life. God designed it this way because he knows we grow stronger when facing adversity and opposition.

When Moses led the children of Israel out of Egypt into the desert toward the Promised Land, he had one problem after another. First there was no water. Then there was no food. Then there were a bunch of complainers. Then there were poisonous snakes. Moses was doing what God wanted him to do, but he still had problems.

David was anointed king, and then for the next several years he was hunted down by Saul. Joseph had a dream of becoming a ruler, yet he was sold into slavery and thrown into prison on a false charge where he languished, forgotten. Imagine the difficulties Noah had building a floating zoo!

The Bible says that when Moses died, Joshua was appointed the new leader. Moses led the people across the desert, and then Joshua led them into the Promised Land. Did he get the easy part? The Bible says that when the Israelites entered the Promised Land, there were giants in the land. Even in the Promised Land there were problems!

God does this because he is building our faith and character. When we finally come to a place where the difficulties become so bad, where we’ve reached our limit, where we’ve tried everything and exhausted all our options, it is then that God begins a mighty work through us: “This means tremendous joy to you, I know, even though you are temporarily harassed by all kinds of trials and temptations. This is no accident — it happens to prove your faith, which is infinitely more valuable than gold …” (1 Peter 1:6-7 PH)

Talk About It —

What circumstances has God brought you through that have grown your faith the most?

What do you think about viewing your critics as God’s way of growing your faith?

Eph 2:6 …Seated with Christ in heavenly places

Same spirit that raised Christ from the dead, dwells in you… Rom 8:11

Eph 1:15-2:6…

(v5) Made us alive together (resurrection)

(v6) Raised us up together (ascension)

(v6) Made us to sit together (present rule) – Seated (sit) – place of rest.

Col 1:13… has delivered us from the power of darkness…

IN CHRIST

Ø Flesh location – Pezula

Ø Spiritual habitation – In Christ

Ø Location – fish in water in tank

In heavenly places – Greek word – invisible realm that surrounds

Our present daily situation

Christ’s authority, which encompasses every age and exceeds every known power, is here and now!!!

Eph 2:6-9 … members of the household of God (family)

We were – CHOSEN, ADOPTED and FORGIVEN – in Christ.

Adopted – legally the same rights as first born – condition to line up with position (i.e. Kate Middleton)

Eph 3:8-10-12 … made known by the church to all in heavenly places – our present daily situation.

God’s intent to display the church before all evil powers as His instrument to dispense throughout the earth what He has already accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord (through Jesus’ death, resurrection and ascension).

Eph 6:12 … for we do not wrestle against (NB not with) flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places (present daily situation)

Col 2:15 (KJV) And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

(Weymouth Translation) … and the hostile princes and rulers He shook off from Himself, and boldly displayed them as His conquests…

SPOILED – apekdugmai – to strip off clothes of another… trans spoil and put off, here it means Satan and his forces were stripped of their power (authority over man) to condemn and kill the race. The law (fine) was blotted out and they had no further claim to hold man in sin and bondage, as they did by means of the law.

CHRIST MADE 2 CONQUESTS (Col 2:15)

Abolished      and cancelled the law by;

a. Blotting it out (v14) (wiped out, erased)

b. Taking it out of the way (v14)

c. Nailing it to the cross (v14)

2.  Defeated      the executors of the law by;

a. Spoiling or conquering them (v15) (disarming)

b. Making a show of them openly (v15) (made a public spectacle of them – displayed them as his conquests (Weymouth))

c. Triumphing over them in the very cross that they thought was a triumph over Him

Satan thought undignified death – cursed is everyone who dies (hangs) on a tree – was his triumph – but in it (the cross) Jesus triumphed over Satan.

*Notes Spirit Filled Life Bible – Col 2:15…

The conquest of hostile spiritual forces is described in terms of a homecoming victory celebration of a Roman general. The idea here is that God, through the Cross events, divested principalities and powers of their uncontested rule and authority over redeemed people who live under Christ’s lordship. The fact the He made a public spectacle of them affirms that they are not annihilated, but that their authority has been curbed.

Ps 110:1

Col 3:1

Heb 1:13

Eph 1:22…Under His feet – feet in body – we are the body…

Eph 6:12 … battle, fight, game is won in the mind. (1 Pet 1:13) … gird up the loins of your mind.

Luke 10:19…Behold, I give unto you authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

WHO GIVES? – Jesus – God manifest – God Himself gives

TO WHOM? – those who believe (the church) (Mark 16:17… signs will follow those who believe)

WHAT? Does He give – Authority (delegated power). I.e. Traffic officer – delegated power to stop 16 wheelers – who is behind officer – Municipality – Province…

Who is behind us, The Church? God Himself.

Eph 1:19-21

Why? That I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection….

John 14:12…He that believes in me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these will he do; because I go to my Father.

– Authority of creation –Jesus storm

– Demons – principalities

– Not humans

Domain – reign and rule in your live – circumstances, poverty, sickness, disease – ALL THROUGH CHRIST.

Strongholds = thoughts captive to obedience of Christ 2 Cor 10:4+5

Past. Melody van der Merwe

08 April 2012 (am)

1 Cor 15:1+2, 20

MY SON DIED FOR YOU… DON’T YOU CARE?

It’s a Wednesday night and you are at a church prayer meeting when somebody runs in from the parking lot and says, “Turn on a radio, turn on a radio.” And while the church listens to a little transistor radio with a microphone stuck up to it, the announcement is made: “Two women are lying in a Long Island hospital dying from the mystery flu.”

Within hours it seems, this thing just sweeps across the country. People are working around the clock trying to find an antidote. Nothing is working. USA, Asia, Africa, Europe, Australasian. It’s as though it’s just sweeping in from all over the world. And then, all of a sudden the news comes out. The code has been broken. A cure can be found. A vaccine can be made. It’s going to take the blood of somebody who hasn’t been infected, and so, sure enough, all through the world, through all those channels of emergency broadcasting, everyone is asked to do one simple thing: Go to your downtown hospital and have your blood type taken. That’s all we ask of you. When you hear the sirens go off in your neighbourhood, please make your way quickly, quietly, and safely to the hospitals.

Sure enough, when you and your family get down there late on that Friday night, there is a long line, and they’ve got nurses and doctors coming out and pricking fingers and taking blood and putting labels on it. Your wife and your kids are out there, and they take your blood type and they say, “Wait here in the parking lot and if we call your name, you can be dismissed and go home.” You stand around, scared, with your neighbours, wondering what in the world is going on and if this is the end of the world. Suddenly a young man comes running out of the hospital screaming. He’s yelling a name and waving a clipboard. What? He yells it again! And your son tugs on your jacket and says, “Daddy, that’s me.” Before you know it, they have grabbed your boy. Wait a minute. Hold on! And they say, “It’s okay, his blood is clean. His blood is pure. We want to make sure he doesn’t have the disease. We think he has got the right type.”

Five tense minutes later, out come the doctors and nurses, crying and hugging one another-some are even laughing. It’s the first time you have seen anybody laugh in a week, and an old doctor walks up to you and says, “Thank you, sir. Your son’s blood type is perfect. It’s clean, it is pure, and we can make the vaccine.” As the word begins to spread all across that parking lot full of folks, people are screaming and praying and laughing and crying.

But then the grey-haired doctor pulls you and you wife aside and says, “May we see you for moment? We didn’t realize that the donor would be a minor and we need … we need you to sign a consent form.”

Number of pints of blood to be taken is empty.

“H-how many pints?” And that is when the old doctor’s smile fades and he says, “We had no idea it would be little child. We weren’t prepared. We need it all.” “But-but…You don’t understand.” “We are talking about the world here. Please sign. We need it all!” “But can’t you give him a transfusion?” “If we had clean blood we would. Can you sign? Would you sign?” In numb silence, you do. Then they say, “Would you like to have a moment with him before we begin?”

Can you walk back? Can you walk back to that room where he sits on a table saying, “Daddy? Mommy? What’s going on?” Can you take his hands and say, “Son, your mommy and I love you, and we would never ever let anything happen to you that didn’t just have to be. Do you understand that?” And when that old doctor comes back in and says, “I’m sorry, we’ve-got to get started. People all over the world are dying.”

Can you leave? Can you walk out while he is saying, “Dad? Mom? Dad? “Why, why have you forsaken me?”

And then next week, when they have the ceremony to honour your son, and some folks sleep through it, and some folks don’t even come because they go to the lake, and some folks come with a pretentious smile and just pretend to care.

Would you want to jump up and say, “MY SON DIED FOR YOU! DON’T YOU CARE?”

Is that what GOD wants to say? “MY SON DIED FOR YOU. DON’T YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I CARE?” Father, seeing it from your eyes breaks our hearts. Maybe now we can begin to comprehend the great Love you have for us.”

Mark 15:33-39

Matt 27:50-54

Matt 28:1-6

1 Cor 15:1-11+20

Col 3:1-11.

Truth-In-Action 2 (Spirit Filled Life Bible) at the end of Colossians.

Steps to Holiness

Under the old covenant the Law’s system only allowed limited access to God. The new covenant no longer poses rules for cleansing, but calls to faith and acceptance of completed work of Jesus. We are not to allow anything other than the Word of God to control or judge us. We are neither judged holy nor unholy by external regulations, but by the condition of our heart.

“Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word.” (Ephesians 5:25-26 NIV)

You don’t have to live with guilt, regret, or shame anymore. Too many people are stuck with memories from their past that they can’t get over. Either you’ve been hurt and have resentment or you’ve hurt someone else and you have guilt.

God doesn’t want you to carry that heavy baggage throughout your life. He wants you to be free. That’s one reason God gave us the Bible. He uses his Word to eradicate our guilt.

I remember many years ago, when I was preaching, a woman came up to me in tears. She began to pour out a very sad story to me, complete with all the bad mistakes she had made. She was distraught and weeping profusely. She kept saying how very guilty she felt.

Then I read her 1 John 1:9: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (NIV). It’s the soap-dish verse. God says he’ll give you a bath; he’ll get rid of the dirt on your life, forgive you, and wipe away your sins.

Then I took her to Romans 8:1: “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (NIV). She asked, “You mean all the things I’ve done wrong in my life, God’s not going to punish me for?” Nope. “Why?” she asked. Because Jesus paid for those things. “What about those I’ll commit tomorrow?” she asked. Jesus paid for those, too.

God’s Word cleanses the dirt, cleans up my mind, and washes my body. It gets all the dirt, the junk, the grime, the grit, the shame, and the sin out of my life.

The Bible says in Ephesians 5:25-26: “Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word” (NIV).

Talk About It

God has promised to forgive your sin. Have you asked him to forgive you?

How do you think your life would change if you accepted God’s grace and forgiveness and let go of your regret?
